Green Tailgate
Green since 2005

In the early years, our tailgate was never described as 'green'. Over the past few years we've increased our eco-friendliness dramatically.

It all started in 2005 when one of our members brought trash bags to the tailgate. All of a sudden we actually started throwing things away like normal tailgaters. It was refreshing and it led to the eco-friendly tailgate lives we live today.

Here are just a few things we've implemented to become more environmentally friendly.

  • We save bottles and cans. These bottles and cans are recycled and the proceeds go to the 'CANS FOR CRITTERS program at the San Diego Zoo. Over the past three years we've raised over $500 for this special program. We feel, the worse the headache on Monday, the more we contributed to the cause. And we're happy to do it.

  • We limit our paper plate usage. We encourage all San Diego Chargers Tailgating members to not use paper plates. Why do you need a plate anyway? You're at a tailgate. Just grab the burger off the grill, put it in a bun, and eat it! Don't waste a paper plate. I mean, you are only going to put the burger on your plate maybe 4 or 5 times before you eat it. Our members live by the motto, Save A Tree ... Eat Paper Free.

  • We carpool. Carpooling and trolleying are the recommended means of transportation to the tailgate. Our members are very receptive to picking up and dropping off. Well, there was this one time last season when noone would give me a ride home after a game and I had to take a cab. I guess that wasn't so green... Oh, and we boooo anyone who drives to the game by themselves. Aside from the $25 they paid to park, think of the gas they wasted and the emissions they put into the atmosphere. Jerks.

  • We eat more vegetables. I'm sure someone can tell us why this is green. I'm pretty sure it is. Well, at least it is healthier. More lettuce for my burger please!
